# Brix to Gravity Converter

Brix and degrees Plato measure dissolved sugar as a percentage of solution weight, while specific gravity compares solution density to water. The conversion between them is a cubic polynomial: °P = −676.0 + 1286.4 × SG − 800.4 × SG² + 190.74 × SG³. For quick mental math, gravity points divided by four approximates degrees Plato.

## FAQ

### Is Brix the same as Plato?

Close enough for brewing. Both measure dissolved solids as a percentage by weight; they are defined against slightly different reference sugars, and the difference is smaller than the error in reading the instrument.

### Can I use this during fermentation?

No. Once alcohol is present a refractometer reading needs correcting — use the refractometer calculator. A hydrometer reading can be converted directly with this page at any stage.
