Brix to Gravity Converter
Brix and degrees Plato measure dissolved sugar as a percentage of solution weight, while specific gravity compares solution density to water. The conversion between them is a cubic polynomial: °P = −676.0 + 1286.4 × SG − 800.4 × SG² + 190.74 × SG³. For quick mental math, gravity points divided by four approximates degrees Plato.

Brix, Plato and specific gravity
All three describe how much dissolved sugar a wort contains. Specific gravity compares its density to water — 1.055 means 5.5% denser. Degrees Plato is the percentage of the wort’s weight that is sugar. Brix is the same measure defined against sucrose; for brewing purposes °Bx and °P are interchangeable.
The conversion from gravity to Plato is a cubic fit:
°P = −676.0 + 1286.4 × SG − 800.4 × SG² + 190.74 × SG³
A useful shortcut for mental arithmetic: °P ≈ gravity points / 4. A 1.048 wort is about 12 °P.

Gravity points
Brewers usually talk in “points” — the digits after the decimal, times a thousand. A 1.055 wort has 55 points. Points are convenient because they scale linearly with volume: 19 liters at 55 points diluted to 23 liters gives 19 × 55 / 23 ≈ 45 points, or 1.045.
This is also the basis of the efficiency calculation, which compares the points you extracted against the points the malt could have given.

Is Brix the same as Plato?
Close enough for brewing. Both measure dissolved solids as a percentage by weight; they are defined against slightly different reference sugars, and the difference is smaller than the error in reading the instrument.
Can I use this during fermentation?
No. Once alcohol is present a refractometer reading needs correcting — use the refractometer calculator. A hydrometer reading can be converted directly with this page at any stage.
