Brewgravity vs ProMash
ProMash was the first brewing program a lot of people ever used, and for a Windows shareware program from the early 2000s it was remarkably complete. It has not seen meaningful development in a very long time, it is Windows-only, and getting it running on a current machine is a project in itself. An installed program that never phones home will keep working long after any web service has changed its terms. That is a real property and it is why some brewers have never moved.
You already know where everything is
Twenty years of muscle memory is worth more than a feature list. Any replacement has to earn that back.

Moving your recipes across
Four steps, and your back catalog comes with you.
- In ProMash, open each recipe and use the BeerXML export if your version has it (later releases do).
- If it does not, the recipe can be retyped — the grain bill, hop schedule and yeast are all you need, and Brewgravity fills in the ingredient data for you.
- Create a free Brewgravity account and open Import.
- Set your efficiency to whatever you had in ProMash so the gravities match.
ProMash and Brewgravity — common questions
Does ProMash still work?
It still runs on Windows for many people, but it has not been actively developed in years, its style guidelines predate BJCP 2021, and it has no macOS, Linux or mobile version.
How do I get my recipes out of ProMash?
Later ProMash releases can export BeerXML, which Brewgravity imports directly. If yours cannot, retyping a recipe takes a couple of minutes because the ingredient data is filled in for you.
What replaced ProMash?
Most brewers moved to BeerSmith, Brewer's Friend or Brewfather. Brewgravity is a newer option covering the same ground with a free plan and no installation.
